Culinary heritage is historic heritage--Legarda

In celebration of Filipino Food Month, Senator Loren Legarda underscored the country's rich culinary heritage, highlighting its deep connection to history and national identity.

"As an archipelago, our country has nurtured countless stories that are passed down through generations by means of food. Meals are more than sustenance--they are opportunities to create and share memories, celebrate traditions, and reconnect with our roots," said Legarda.

"We must preserve and protect our culinary heritage as it reflects our national pride and further elevates the Philippines' stature on the global culinary stage," she added.

Legarda authored numerous bills aimed at preserving Philippine culinary heritage, including Senate Bill No. 244 or the proposed Philippine Culinary Heritage Act of 2022, which aims to integrate culinary heritage into the education sector, preserving traditional ingredients, recipes, and cooking techniques.

This measure will also implement culinary mapping, documenting local food geography, regional cooking methods, and indigenous peoples' cuisines.

"Supporting culinary heritage preservation also means uplifting our local farmers, strengthening food security, and promoting sustainable tourism," Legarda emphasized.

To address food wastage and hunger, Legarda also filed Senate Bill No. 240, or the Zero Food Waste Act of 2022.

"If enacted, this bill will help mitigate hunger and curb food wastage by establishing a National Zero Food Waste Campaign through coordinated government efforts," explained the four-term senator.

"Let us extend robust support to our agricultural industry while championing traditional cooking practices and heirloom recipes."

Filipino Food Month, also known as Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino, is celebrated every April pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 469, s. 2018 to conserve, promote, and popularize Filipino cuisine as part of the country's cultural heritage.
