Located in Tchumene, Matola, construction of the $25 million facility began in October 2023.

Further specifications of the facility have not been shared, but it is said to be the country’s largest.

The carrier-neutral data center also offers direct access to the 2Africa subsea cable, hosted in Vodacom Mozambique’s equipment room in Matola.

The launch was attended by Prime Minister Benvinda Levi. She said: “Our country now has 18 data centers, including this one from Vodacom Mozambique, which has just been inaugurated. Establishing this data center is a significant step forward in our country’s digital transformation.”

The company previously installed a modular data center in Matola in 2013.

In May 2023, Vodacom Mozambique launched commercial 5G services in Maputo with a plan to extend its 5G services to other parts of the country in upcoming years.

As of November last year, the operator reported serving more than 10 million customers in Mozambique.

Vodafone also operates under the Vodacom name in several other African markets, including Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Nigeria, and Safaricom in Kenya and Ethiopia.

iColo and Raxio both have a presence in Maputo, Mozambique.
