Aberdeen red card claim on Pape Gueye sees Motherwell boss offer illuminating stance on referee call
Michael Wimmer felt the Senegal striker should have walked for his knee-high challenge on Andy Halliday
Motherwell manager Michael Wimmer felt Aberdeen’s Pape Gueye was lucky not to be sent off at Pittodrie.
He felt the Senegal striker should have walked for his knee-high challenge on Andy Halliday with the match at 1-1. The Dons went on to win 4-1 and seal their place in the top six but Wimmer felt Gueye’s flashpoint was a game changer.
Wimmer said: “I think if the referee (Ross Hardie) gave a red card, no-one wants to say it's not a red card. I saw a tackle in the high from the knee and this is for me a red card.
"But it's a decision from the referee. It's a decision from the referee. We have to accept this and we have to play football and not discuss the referee. But a red changed the situation, of course.”
Wimmer criticised his side for giving up when it went to 3-1. He disappointingly said: “I had the feeling we would give up after 3-1, the spaces between the lines were too big and reactions after mistakes were not okay.
"This game is a big learning, I hope so. We will speak about it again in the last 15 minutes
"But to be honest, for me Aberdeen is a brilliant team, they played perfectly, especially in possession.”
Wimmer also revealed he lost captain Liam Gordon. He had felt ill before the game and then had to come off early doors.
He confirmed: “After a warm-up he felt a little bit sick, and then after 10-15 minutes he said he would change because of illness, his stomach.”
Motherwell are still in the fight for top six going into the last two games.
He added: “Three times in a row we didn't lose, now we lose against a good team. In the end, the table is so tight, so everything is possible. As I said before on Thursday, for us it's good that we are in this race.”
