WASHINGTON (AZFamily) — President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has nominated former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich as the next U.S. ambassador to Serbia.

“As the son of refugees who fled communism, Mark will be a strong advocate for Freedom, and always put AMERICA FIRST. Congratulations Mark!,” the president said on Truth Social.

Brnovich has previously described himself as the son of immigrants who fled communism in Yugoslavia.

The announcement comes weeks after Politico reported that Trump had been considering former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The Illinois governor had his sentence commuted by the president in 2020 and Blagojevich’s father was from Serbia, the outlet reported.

Brnovich has said that he used his post as attorney general to take on “crony capitalists” and government overreach while promoting religious liberty, border security and election integrity. He lost a primary bid to unseat Sen. Mark Kelly in the 2022 election.

As attorney general, Brnovich picked a number of high-profile fights, including suing the Arizona Board of Regents — which is typically his client — over plans to build a hotel at Arizona State University. He’s also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate part of the Voting Rights Act in a high-stakes case filed by the Democratic National Committee.

Before being elected attorney general in 2014, Brnovich was a federal prosecutor and head of the state Gaming Department, which regulates gambling.

His nomination must now be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
