Vera Sola, whose debut album is due soon, to perform in San Diego with Rodriguez
Singer-songwriter Vera Sola’s debut album, “Shades,” won’t be released until November. But San Diego audiences can sample this Harvard literature graduate’s music when she opens Thursday’s concert at Humphreys by fellow singer-songwriter Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar-winning film documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man.”
Sola, whose real name is Danielle Aykroyd, is the daughter of film star and original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Dan Aykroyd. The fact that no reference of her famous father appears in the biography on her website, or in her press materials, suggests that Sola wisely wants to be taken solely on her own merits).
She’s a classically trained pianist who cut her teeth playing in the band of Elvis Perkins — the son of “Psycho” actor Anthony Perkins — before going solo last year. On “Shades,” Sola handles all of the vocal and instrumental parts — some played on found objects — herself.
Drawing from blues, cabaret music, rock, country and folk, her carefully textured songs often have a haunted quality. So, for that matter, does her four-song 2017 EP, “Vera Sola Sings Last Caress,” on which she transforms high-octane songs by pioneering punk-rock band the Misfits into gently forlorn ballads with a decidedly eerie edge.
