The ink is barely dry on Cisco’s acquisition of IoT platform provider Jasper. But Cisco is already capitalizing on the buy, expanding Jasper's reach with three new partnerships that will enable it to scale out its IoT operations and secure IoT connections.

It has also partnered with the postal service in Luxembourg to offer turnkey managed connectivity solution customers in any vertical.

New IoT Partnerships

According to an announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the new partnerships include:

  • Gemalto, a subscription management giant that provides on-demand subscription management (OSM) solutions for connected devices. This partnership will integrate Jasper’s IoT service platform with Gemalto’s OSM solutions to make it simple for enterprises to scale their IoT device deployments across multiple operators globally.
  • Telular, which provides security and telematics to numerous industries, will integrate the Jasper Control Center IoT service platform with its SkyBitz and Telguard products to enable telematics providers and security providers to reduce cost and deliver new revenue-generating services to their customers worldwide.
  • POST: Jasper and Luxembourg’s national post and telecoms provider (POST) have entered into a partnership that will enable Jasper, using the POST national telecommunications services, to provide enterprises with a way to launch, manage and monetize IoT service businesses. As part of that announcement Jasper has also announced that, through their combined efforts, they have migrated 1.1 million Peugeot and Citroen (PSA) vehicles onto the Jasper platform.

Sanjay Khatri, director of project marketing at Jasper, called the Gemalto partnership significant because it covers both the network part of the IoT equation through the Gemalto expertise and the platform part of the equation from from the Jasper end.

“We are starting to see the mainstream IT ecosystems become more constructive in how they approach IoT and the way they are using the Jasper platform,” he told CMSWire. “We are also partnering at the other end —  on the network side — with companies like Gemalto, the leader in the development of embedded SIMs that enable any compatible SIM to be localized on any operators’ networks."

What it means is that multinationals that are developing IoT-driven businesses in several different geographies will be able to use a single SIM chip that is localized for the local network in the geography concerned.

Learning Opportunities

It also means that enterprises using the Jasper platform can configure a Global eSIM as local on operator networks worldwide, providing enterprises with a single service level agreement (SLA) and point of contact for service and support across multiple operators.

Speaking about the announcements globally, Khatri said that they are the latest in a series of moves to extend its global alliances.

“This is just the latest stage in our alliance strategy. At MWC (Mobile World Congress) last year we announced we were partnering with SAP and Salesforce, and. since then, IBM and Microsoft. This is a continuation of our alliance strategy the result of which is that we are partners with 27 operator groups representing 127 networks.”

What About Cisco?

Cisco bought Jasper to gain the essential connect with telco’s that it has lacked.

Khatri argues that the Cisco buy was as close to perfect as you can get in an acquisition. Jasper and its team will become the Cisco IoT department and will bring with it know-how and technologies that Cisco doesn’t have to date

“Any time there is an acquisition there are always questions as to where they are going to work together and where they will overlap,” Khatri said.

“That’s not the case here. These are two companies that have perfect synergies. The overlap here is zero. It’s all complementary, it’s all additives. It’s a match made in heaven. Cisco is not only committed to the IoT space but to what Jasper has already achieved.”
